With reference to the letter addressed to you
from this Office on the 20th December 1894, No: Hong
Kong 2/4690 and to the reply from the Treasury of the
28th December 1894, No: 18883/94; I am directed by the
Secretary of State for War to transmit herewith the copy
of a letter received from the General Officer Commanding
at Hong Kong on the subject of the expenditure on
barracks at that Station, and particularly such portion

of the expenditure as is to fall on Colonial Funds.

Broadly, under the conditions defined in the
correspondence above referred to, the Colony were to
provide, in the course of 10 years, for an expenditure
on barracks estimated to amount to $446,512
being 1/3rd of a total contemplated expenditure of $1,359,536
Of the sum of $446,512 the Colony have provided about
$79,450 and the arrangement has hitherto been that with
the money so provided the Colony should undertake cer-
tain definite services which thus remained outside
the sphere of War Office finance.
